Domestic communists in the USA, who never numbered more than a few hundred thousand in a country of 120 million+, are exactly the type of unpopular minority that liberal democracies are supposed to tolerate. But USA, including liberals, failed to do so.

This weirdly reminds me of the underdiscussed degree to which the groundwork and institutional base for the Red Scare/McCarthyism was largely built in the less discussed "Brown Scare" when there was fear of NAZI infiltration- HUAC was originally formed in 1938 for this purpose
