It's rare I envy a lack of knowledge but I would love to be innocent of any knowledge about the PMC debate.https://twitter.com/TomChivers/status/1519287086842626049 …

what is the PMC? I didn't understand the reference in Freddie's piece and googling just tells me things like "Planet Minecraft", "Potential Man Candy" and "Private Military Company", none of which make sense to me

Hot take: the idea of a Professional Managerial Class (PMC) or a New Class made sense in the managerial world of 1940s-1950s, when a branch of intellectual life was integrated with state & corporate power. But that class has been in decline for decades.

I think that's wrong. I think the class difference between like a high school teacher and a plumber is probably more now than it was 50 years ago.

For an economist's understanding of why the PMC came about, and why it still matters, I recommend John Kenneth Galbraith's "The New Industrial State".

The PMC are decently to well-paid laborers who don’t own means of production. Drs who’re hospital employees, lawyers at large corporate firms, school admin & coders, etc Most PMC willingly sacrifice everyone & anything else to hold or reclaim lost comfort PMC Covid behaviors👇pic.twitter.com/y6CX3aCyow
