I'm curious what would have happened if instead of Hirohito the photograph had been Hideki Tojo; would there still have been pushback? After all, the Italian pictured was not Victor Emmanuel, it was Mussolini. And the narrative is always that Hirohito was ceremonial, not guilty.

Not defending it, but are they trying to toe a fine Tojo vs. Hirohito line. Tojo was a fascist, Hirohito was just a bystander who happened to be Emperor at the time (of all the crummy luck!)
