It sounds like the way they’re notifying the survivors is unnecessarily antagonistic, but they’re actually providing a very important service that Russia is not providing for the families of its own soldiers.

They shouldn't be taking the photos, they shouldn't taunting the families of the dead. This is utterly vile.

Someone has to keep a record to identify the dead and Russia’s not doing it. Russia is abandoning the bodies of its own troops to rot.

Are people criticizing them for keeping records or for violating the Geneva Convention and using photographs to taunt the families of the dead? I think this part of the article is instructive.pic.twitter.com/Voz9O6d4gi

You said that they shouldn’t be taking photographs of them at all and I was responding to your argument. And what’s the textual support for this being a war crime? They’re not holding the soldiers as objects of public curiosity, they’re privately notifying families.

This story makes it very clear that they’re using the ClearView software to notify next-of-kin. https://reut.rs/3xx9p9C pic.twitter.com/VKomsQGJpt

The Russian government has been unresponsive about repatriating the remains of its own fallen soldiers, which it abandoned to rot on the battlefield. https://bit.ly/3OdKtKn pic.twitter.com/EZj0qFgIvb

In that situation the responsibility of the Ukrainian government, as per Geneva convention & international norms, is to respectfully bury dead & to record identities (which are easily established by dog tags). It is NOT to photograph charred bodies & use them in propaganda war.
