The relevant part of the Convention is ambiguous. It prohibits "inappropriate" treatment of casualties, including desecration of bodies and taking pictures *with* them (not *of* them, which of course would also proscribe combat journalism). Intent probably is relevant here.

Mistreating POWs is a war crime. Taking photos of the dead is not. The Ukrainians should refrain from publishing videos of their POWs, even if voluntary or "voluntary". If they are no longer prisoners or at risk of harm it would have been a different story.

Ugh. WAR itself is a crime. The idea that killing people with bullets vs poison gas makes a difference is armchair bullshit. if anything, purveyors of this hoary trope buy into this Hemmingway-esque ideal of "romantic war" b/c it pretends there's a civilized way to fight one.
