When andrew Johnson ran for re-election, he travelled town to town delivering the same five minute speech about defending the constitution. Newspapers would print it in town the day before, and he was so hated crowds would recite it one line ahead of him.

He took on Johnson because Johnson was the only southern democratic senator who didn’t secede and was temporarily in charge of Tennessee after it was recaptured. So choosing him showed a willingness to accept the south back into the union, from my general understanding.
