Memo to Howard Schultz: the people who work for you already have families. they don't need you to be a father figure. They need you to negotiate in good faith with their union.https://twitter.com/MorePerfectUS/status/1513157469769506823 …

Schultz has no illusions that that he's running a corporation. But he wants workers to think he thinks of himself as their corporate Dad, and not to think about how many lawyers signed off on every word Schultz says to them and how many of those words were written by consultants.

It takes a special kind of father figure to put employees behind counters with unmasked customers during peak Delta, while not providing quality masks or enforcing mask rules evenly among employees. My vaccinated barista daughter did not enjoy being sick with Omicron for a week.

Perhaps I’m quibbling, but I don’t think the “core” motivation for unionbusting is economic. It’s about power and control in the workplace. There are many industries where unions improve the bottom line and they are fought just as hard.
-
A good example is construction. Union construction workers get higher wages and benefits, but do the work faster, with less wastage of raw materials, and fewer mistakes, meaning the bottom line for the companies that use union labor is improved. Yet they resist unions.

I actually don't think the core motivation for union busting is economic. It's power. And not just for Schultz, but for everyone who thinks THEY built Starbucks and the workers are just their minions who should be grateful for the opportunity to serve them and their vision.
-
SBUX just suspended buybacks in a response to unionization, so there is a powerful (if not core) economic motivation to union bust. More $ for workers (labor) typically means less $ for shareholders (capital). It's an old struggle, but one US labor has been losing for decades.
