Pop quiz: In 1973, in an effort to unify Dems, Ted Kennedy keynoted a gala for a man whom the NYT described as having come "to symbolize the frustrations of Southerners, ethnic Northerners and other traditional Democrats who think the party has moved too far left." Who was he?

Yup. He was an object of some sympathy for a time, lots of even left Dems visited with him, including McGovern, out of some combination of sincere generosity and political calculation.

Shirley Chisholm went to visit him in the hospital, which is supposed to have been a real conversion moment for him on race.pic.twitter.com/T8oll5patJ
