The United States is a WASP republic and empire, forged in the context of Anglo-Spanish rivalry over control of the Western Hemisphere, and it has throughout its expansionist history killed lots of Catholics to the south - often cruelly and atrociously.

How does this comport with the Catholic empires? Spain had a pretty robust crusading internationalism for almost a millennia.

I think this is wishful thinking which ignores the far more immediate alliance-building over cultural issues that US conservatives of all denominations have been doing with the Putin regime and its far-right offspring in Europe.

Conservative Catholic activists (Dulles brothers, Bishop Sheen, Madame Chiang and Clare Luce, a whole cabal) played a huge role in enticing US into Vietnam. This was in part because the Ngo brothers were intensely Catholic themselves. But were there more cases in Africa?
