This is interesting. I'd add more broadly that crusading internationalism is very intertwined with a certain type of Protestantism. Catholics joined on for Cold War b/c of anti-communism but otherwise skeptical of this tendency.https://twitter.com/michaelbd/status/1511776691236093955 …

A friend asks why conservative Catholics are less supportive of an expansive foreign policy. There are some specific reasons, but mostly it is the same reason everyone else has: the last two decades of intervention brought chaos, persecution, and failure. https://www.nationalreview.com/2022/04/have-catholics-lost-the-will-to-fight/ …

Odd development given the provenance of the adjective “crusading”

Catholics can be crusading if they dominant a polity, not if they're a minority.

        I love the euphemism “expansive”.

The United States is a WASP republic and empire, forged in the context of Anglo-Spanish rivalry over control of the Western Hemisphere, and it has throughout its expansionist history killed lots of Catholics to the south - often cruelly and atrociously.

How does this comport with the Catholic empires? Spain had a pretty robust crusading internationalism for almost a millennia.

Obviously USA where Catholics are minority different than polities where they rule.

I think this is wishful thinking which ignores the far more immediate alliance-building over cultural issues that US conservatives of all denominations have been doing with the Putin regime and its far-right offspring in Europe.

Conservative Catholic activists (Dulles brothers, Bishop Sheen, Madame Chiang and Clare Luce, a whole cabal) played a huge role in enticing US into Vietnam. This was in part because the Ngo brothers were intensely Catholic themselves. But were there more cases in Africa?

@marklungo That's the origin of my interest in the church. To a half-Jewish atheist draft resister ca. 1971, sisters and brothers at the local Newman Center seemed like the most beautiful people in the world--they were so welcoming and convinced. And fun!

Catholics don't believe in immanentizing the eschaton. It's one of their good points.
