All the Putin 12D chess theories aside, I've been reading a lot of mil analysts over the last month+ and I haven't seen a single one who thinks you'd plan a military campaign like the one Russia did if you were REALLY trying to capture Donbas and the Black Sea coast. Not one.https://twitter.com/RALee85/status/1510351186934878214 …

Russia deployed more BTGs to Belarus than it did to Crimea for the invasion, including more VDV, Rosgvardia SOF, and SSO. Add in the army (+) from Bryansk that advanced towards Kyiv and the imbalance is even greater. Kyiv and the north was the priority and Ukrainian forces held. https://twitter.com/GrayConnolly/status/1510240777959804936 …

2/ Probably more meaningful question is can Russia can pivot to a different plan to achieve some core aims and whether it has the military to execute such a strategy. But the “this was the plan all along” dialog just seems downstream of generic Putin genius man of steel fanboyism.

Before the war started, I thought it would end badly for Russia in the long run (like Iraq and Afghanistan) because it would drain blood & treasury & alienate the world. What I didn't guess at -- couldn't even imagine -- was how incompetently it would be even in the short run.

I mean, it looks like they thought they could bribe a few selected officials, they'd mass a force, be everywhere, and watch everyone surrender.

same. Seemed like a strategic disaster before it started. But I didn’t have any idea they’d actually lose the conventional war.

Given what we were led to believe about the Russians it should have been a cake walk - but then the fighting started. That's the real test.

It is extraordinary, especially for those of us who grew up during the Cold War (later years edition) w/ the idea that the world was just U.S. & USSR. Russia seemed so terrifying & powerful. Now my kids are like, “Russia? What’s the big deal?”

It was more than just Russian incompetence. It was that incompetence against an army that spent 7 years drinking deeply of Western European/American military philosophy and expertise. This was a system versus system fight and the Russian authoritarian one doesn’t match up.

it me. My usual line immediately prior was, "I don't see any way for Ukraine to win the war. I don't see any way for Russia to win the occupation." Well, that was a take that aged like fine fish, I'll tell you what.
