1. So if I'm reading Ross right, he's mad that CODA won and Dune didn't. Now, I like Dune quite a bit but it's worth thinking about why Dune wasn't really in the running despite being in the (longish) nomination list.https://twitter.com/DouthatNYT/status/1508950829885235200 …

2. Okay, Ross Douthat isn't mad Dune didn't win. So I won't use him as a straw man. But my friend
@bellye66 is mad that Dune didn't win and he's not alone. But I was pretty sure that despite its impressive number of nominations and wins Dune didn't stand a chance. Why?11 replies 0 retweets 21 likesShow this thread -
3. The Academy likes to reward "sweet-natured little movies" and rarely rewards big budget fantasy/sci-fi with best picture (the big modern exception is the last Lord of Rings, which has the sanction of being seen as capital-L Literature)

4. In addition to being a sci-fi spectacle, Dune is also only half a movie (2nd part might have more of a shot) but also humanely remote. It's all about awe & grandeur & not, as the kids say, relatable (unless you're a genetic superman/messiah).

5. Anyways, @bellye66 and I argue about various Oscar stuff -- the slap, of course, but also who won and why, Campion's triumph, Dune versus CODA etc.https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/podcast-the-slap-heard-round-the?r=bh54&s=w&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email …
