2. Okay, Ross Douthat isn't mad Dune didn't win. So I won't use him as a straw man. But my friend @bellye66 is mad that Dune didn't win and he's not alone. But I was pretty sure that despite its impressive number of nominations and wins Dune didn't stand a chance. Why?

3. The Academy likes to reward "sweet-natured little movies" and rarely rewards big budget fantasy/sci-fi with best picture (the big modern exception is the last Lord of Rings, which has the sanction of being seen as capital-L Literature)

4. In addition to being a sci-fi spectacle, Dune is also only half a movie (2nd part might have more of a shot) but also humanely remote. It's all about awe & grandeur & not, as the kids say, relatable (unless you're a genetic superman/messiah).

Dune fans (like myself) like sound and technical visual accomplishment. You know, my favourite Oscar categories that they decided to do off camera. So even if we divide “good for the industry” from “good for the Oscars”…
