I would like to nominate Wallace Stevens for some kind of award for being the poet whose staunchly conservative politics you would have the most trouble divining from his poetry.

I certainly never picked up on them! And thanks, Jeet! Should also add G.B. Shaw to this list but I'm not even sure whether to classify him as right or left -- he just had a thing for dictators across the board!

This conversation has proved that good art is a bit more conservative than the left realizes OR it has proved that art (or people) become conservative or even reactionary when time overtakes them.

Maybe the fact that through out modern history the only people who were able to feed themselves on art were either insanely lucky or were independently wealthy. We just pretend there are a lot more people who come from the prior category.
