Back in the 90s I really disliked Stephen Holmes' category of "anti-liberalism," which suggested that the differences among these various thinkers and ideas didn't matter and they were defined by this one thing they weren't. Holmes saw Compact coming and I didn't, in other words.

Maybe true for libertarians - who are always quite a small part of the right coalition - but 'some people claim conservatives are actually liberals, therfore they are' isn't a great argument.
