I am continually perplexed by the Anglophone divergence on transphobia. Why is there so much more TERF representation in the UK elite than in their US and Canadian peers?

This isn't the whole answer but one factor is that in USA/Canada had a space for "theory" (Judith Butler etc.) which the UK academy was much more resistant to (because of the stranglehold of analytical & empiricist traditions). Very different elite schools

I don’t buy this at all. North American philosophy departments are dominated by Anglo-American analytic approaches yet don’t produce UK style “gender critical” nonsense at nearly the same level.

"theory" doesn't reside in philosophy departments but in humanities more broadly. It made major inroads in USA in 1970s/1980s which were resisted much more strongly in Oxbridge, leading to an elite culture where people are much less likely to take gender critical ideas seriously

But that’s exactly my point. If you spend any time in NA philosophy departments, you can feel the disdain for “theory” - same as UK. An idea being associated with Butler would be a significant detriment to it. And yet, no major tradition of TERFism there.

But if you expand outward from philosophy departments, the humanities as a whole in the United States are, I think, much more capacious and sympathetic to "theory" than in the UK.

Right, that's my point. That in the humanities as a whole (where many people get educated than just philosophy dept's), gender theory is much more mainstream in USA than UK. So you get a different elite formation, one less likely to accept essentialism of terf ideas.

For the record, one of Rowling's TERF influences was previously known as an avowed foe of continental theory https://www.thecut.com/article/who-did-j-k-rowling-become.html …pic.twitter.com/MOgSeTvJN8
