Polarization is part of it. Over here, transphobia is seen as Republican, which no journalist finds appealing. I get the impression it's less partisan there (and the Tories are less unthinkable than the GOP)

Also, although it would require someone more versed in UK politics than I am, the trans issue has become part of a proxy war inside Labour between various factions in a way it hasn't in inter-Dem arguments.
