I suspect it's partly a greater stigma against bigotry thanks to the civil rights movement

Polarization is part of it. Over here, transphobia is seen as Republican, which no journalist finds appealing. I get the impression it's less partisan there (and the Tories are less unthinkable than the GOP)

Credit where it's due, 3rd wave feminism fought hard in the US to draw a line saying that transphobia is not feminism. There were some rough interactions with 2nd wave feminists, but they mostly won them over.

The transphobia in the UK is pretty much entirely twitter/confected culture war issue. There is barely any thoughts either way in the wider public consciousness. Gender fluidity has been a weirdly prominent part of British culture for a long time. For most its a none issue
