Great discussion. I think that what many of us got wrong was that we assumed, quite wrongly, that P was a typical corrupt leader: cynical, self-interested, and therefore predictable. But P is an ideologue. This feels so outdated and even shocking, but there it is. 1/2

P believes in something: some nationalistic, mythical, religiously-grounded idea of Russia as a great civilization. And in an autocratic state, the leader makes the decisions. Many of us are still wrapping our heads around all this. 2/2
