Most philosophers have followed Aristotle’s definition of philosophy as metaphysics (the study of “being qua being”). This is, alas, incredibly inaccessible. Analytic philosophy, for all its flaws, has understood this. Butler writes about the most popular thing—sex!

It's true! Important and influential philosophers like Plato would never right about something so popular as sex.

There are also incredibly significant analytic philosophers whose importance can only be understood with patience. To say nothing of Wittgenstein (and how “popular” is the Tractatus?), Kripke, Davidson, and Anscombe.
