the idea that the Cold War was primarily about ideology is a very end of history perspective on the CW. the cold war was about the US rise to primacy, imo

While a lot of what happened in the Cold War was arguably about fighting over what would replace the old European imperialism, it seems hard to explain the immediate severe break between US/UK/France on the one hand, and the USSR on the other hand, without ideology.

Agreed: there's simply no way to distinguish the ideology of the free market from the cause of US supremacy. If the Soviets had the same economics as, say, West Germany there would've been no cold war as such. But US likely to have gained supremacy after WW2 no matter what.
