This is a good thread but what I'd like to underscore is that the problem of shaming/shunning is coterminous with social life itself, is likely to be more extreme in democracies (as explained by Tocqueville) & has no easy policy solutions.https://twitter.com/parabasis/status/1504827375913107465 …

More broadly, the key point is the one made by
@jakebackpack which is that in terms of what people can express, there's never been more free speech now than anytime in history. (The one possible exception is Weimar Germany) https://www.gawker.com/media/speaking-freely-has-never-been-easier …pic.twitter.com/K9i28DUR6n

In any case, it's hard to take the "social shunning" stuff as a serious problem when we're seeing actual anti-LGBT laws with real chilling effect and also a wave of Russophobia blacklisting, with little liberal pushback https://twitter.com/BlakeProf/status/1504854545800654848 …

Easier to complain about how people stopped laughing at gay jokes

The only solution I've ever seen from them is that speech should be much more restricted to ensure that it's free.

It's about their feelings more often than economics, but they'd probably turn down socialized therapy too

rarely? I’ve literally never seen them mention it.

Shaming and shunning is a great way to enforce social mores without requiring the power of the state. I think we should be doing more of it, not less. It’s of a piece with not tolerating the intolerant.

i mean you did sign that harper's letter and after facing pushback went "i hope maybe next time people will make a letter actually about the lack of real worker's protections people have" and whaddya know, no such letter has materialized
-
maybe you could materialize that letter and shop it around to the same people who signed the harper's letter and report back who gets on board and who gave you the cold shoulder
