Counter-examples I can think of would be the Franco-Prussian war (and associates wars of German unification) and England starting the Seven Years War (but that ended up inuring to the US’s benefit) and obv those are outside your timeframe.

The Franco-Prussian war is actually an excellent example when you consider that the French had a choice of whether to get into it.
