This is right. I think "Soul" was also a Pixar film that went straight to Disney+. Very strange behaviorhttps://twitter.com/daveweigel/status/1502752004036304907 …

More likely that Disney plus is desperate for new content to keep subscribers. Very little new monthly content compared to other streaming services

My guess is that belt-tightening Disney is questioning the necessity of having two full animation studios under their umbrella, especially when they recently closed a third (Blue Sky, after the Fox takeover)

It's a way to (1) ensure that families, who might be loathe to go to theaters during a pandemic for which there weren't vaccines for under 12 until recently, still saw the films and (2) pump up Disney + We saw all three at home. Probably wouldn't have seen any in theaters.

They're trying to build up a subscriber base for their streaming app because they think they will ultimately make more money that way. If they wanted this movie to bomb, why have I seen the trailer 50 times already?

Lightyear is coming to theaters. I feel like they wanted to put a sure fire hit in theaters and use these pandemic releases to boost Disney plus and then go back to regular theatrical release afterwards.

They're sure hit, attention-getting drops to stave off churn and attract new subscribers to D+; the last few Disney Animation features were not viewed as strongly internally. That said, I can't imagine ANYONE at Pixar is thrilled. Plus there's this:https://ew.com/movies/pixar-employees-say-disney-censored-lgbtq-stories/ …

Interesting. Encanto did very well in the time between Thanksgiving and the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but it has reached the $100 mil plateau yet.

@daveweigel A lot of us haven’t felt good about taking kids to theaters (let alone ourselves). Disney+ has been a godsend during the pandemic. Extra things like those Pixar movies released immediately has moved us to an annual subscription.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
