Sipher addresses this argument in his replies with an incredulous exclamation that in that case Iran might as well try to get nukes as deterrent, which, lol, yes

Hmmm, why would any country bother joining NATO if NATO is gonna defend non-members? I'm all for helping Ukraine, but members are members, non-members don't get to call article 5. That being said, give them the damn MiG-29 if they want them.

If we won't oppose any country with nukes, Taiwan and South Korea are toast. This also dramatically increases the incentive to develop and keep nukes for tyrants. We are doing badly enough on nuclear non-proliferation already. We need strategic ambiguity, not absolute licenses.

The US has a mutual defense pact with South Korea. Also with Australia and New Zealand Also with Philippines Also with Thailand Also with all of South America. https://2009-2017.state.gov/s/l/treaty/collectivedefense/index.htm … But yes, Taiwan is not covered.

Kosovo declared independence in 1991. We bombed Serbia in the name of Kosovo independence in 1999. Given that Russia's current military operations center on recognizing the 2014 independence declarations of DPR & LPR, Sipher shouldn't bring up Kosovo; it's bad salesmanshippic.twitter.com/Wv5n4ou3tM

Kosovo was because Milosevic was engaged in ethnic cleansing, and action was OKed by the UN Security Council. Russia... did not go to the UN and had to fabricate evidence to justify itself.

I don’t know, there hasn’t been a nuclear weapon used in almost 8 decades…some might say that’s because the US and Russia have taken pretty massive steps to try & avoid a shooting war during that time, but I’m just going to assume that’s irrelevant & escalation doesn’t exist /s

Just imagining the Russian version of Sipher making this same argument when US invaded Iraq for no reason at all

there is a logic in expressing the clarity of the NATO red line
-
Exactly. Clarity is really important in a situation where crossing the line could mean nuclear war. I'm really shocked at how people are ignoring this fact.
