Hammett's Red Harvest is probably my favorite of the genre. The only actual mystery he tries to solve at any time in that book is whether he himself murdered someone while blackout drunk / drugged.
Many noirs center around detectives, but puzzle-solving/detective work is not a defining feature of noirs.
The resolution in classic crime stories sets society back to rights after the eruption of crime; in noir, society itself stands accused
I watched “The Big Sleep” on a long flight hoping it would make me, y’know, fall asleep. I didn’t conk out till the last 15 minutes, so now I REALLY have no clue what happened.
This seems poorly considered, since there's an Agatha Christie detective movie in theaters right now and Poirot is absolutely the one who solves the mystery
