That's an enormous death count. By way of comparison, it's more than 20% of the deaths USSR suffered (14,500) in a decade occupying Afghanistan (1979-1989).https://twitter.com/DanLamothe/status/1501046387697491972 …

I have no idea what's accurate, but notably it's a considerably more conservative estimate than others I've seen, by a factor of two to three. Those others were from sources with a motive to exaggerate, but even so.

Was the USSR upfront with the numbers of dead in Afghanistan? I often see the war cited as a major contributor of the downfall of the USSR so curious how the impact was “realized” by average Russians.

I honestly have to wonder how tolerant of this Russian military officials are going to be. I don’t pretend to understand their hierarchy. I don’t know how Russian generals value their soldiers & regard casualties. But the morality of massive losses aside… this is embarrassing.

The longer Russia has been at this, the worse it’s making them look on the world stage. Not only because of how near universally it’s opposed, but how poorly executed the whole affair is. It’s hard to convince everyone you’re a superpower when you can barely pull this off

if Russia sustained those losses for 10 years they would lose close to one million soldiers
-
Is there any reason to think that that's a likely scenario? Even if the war did drag out, presumably the intensity of fighting would ebb and flow, the respective forces would establish strongholds reducing their casualties somewhat, etc.

I wouldn't trust anonymous American "estimates" more than I would official Ukrainian counts (11,000). No incentive to be truthful

I think grain of salt absolutely on the figure itself, but clearly *quite high* and higher than anticipated.
