I think the USA was irrational for launching and continuing 20 years of doomed wars in the Middle East.https://twitter.com/DAlperovitch/status/1500868124136165380 …

It is interesting that people think that Putin is irrational for launching a disastrous and doomed war in Ukraine but they don't think that the US is irrational for launching and then continuing for 20 years doomed wars in the Middle East...

Putin's decision to invade Ukraine was irrational & will destroy his stated policy goals of restoring Greater Russia. That isn't anomalous & strange. Political elites do irrational things all the time. Bush's foreign policy is only most recent example.https://twitter.com/DAlperovitch/status/1500868124136165380 …

Do we think political elites are always rational & do what's in their best interest? Norman Angell argued with great acuity in 1909 in The Great Illusion that a large war in Europe would be a disaster for all parties. European elites then proceeded to do what he warned against

It was certainly wrong to launch and continue 20 years of wars in the middle east, but its only irrational if you dont consider the goal of our military contractors was to extract trillions in profits from the taxpayers and the war effort itself was almost a secondary concern.

Putin didn't invent unilateralism. The 2003 invasion of Iraq was criminal, not irrational. Neo-cons hoped bypassing the UN would diminish the importance of the rule of law, worldwide; it worked.

I think the lesson of Iraq and Afghanistan is what influences a lot of the unanimity of the response to Putin invading. At this point in history who could think it advantageous to anyone from any perspective to do it?
