It's kind of funny that the conservative response to self-censorship is "colleges must change the underlying conditions of society to make the outcomes of all speech more equitable" rather than "individuals should suck it up and say what they want even if people don't like it"
Daniel Radosh Retweeted Jeffrey Sachs
Colleges should assure students that contrarian opinions won't mean lower grades, but then what? Telling a perceived majority not to object "too much" when someone says something they disagree with or find offensive is an odd way to combat self-censorshiphttps://twitter.com/JeffreyASachs/status/1500818651917783044?s=20&t=w2EJNNvnLWAW6LWu-9Is6Q …
Daniel Radosh added,
The paper this toon ran in was gleefully anti-PC (hailed by @newrepublic for bucking the trend in one of the many 90s versions of these articles!) But when, say, the official paper called it a "turbomale shitbag mag" we didn't whine, we just renamed our letters column "TurboMail"
Also sometimes the people who "piled on" me for my contrarian opinions made me realize I was wrong about something and I changed my mind! I'm glad I wasn't spared that learning experience in the name of fostering my freedom of expression (which again, I had no actual shortage of)
Ok fine, here’s my favorite article from Below the Beltpic.twitter.com/gxe8OJeFUS
How long has this been going on? Here's Sidney Hook rolling his eyes at a book about the silencing of campus conservatives... in 1955 https://www.nytimes.com/1955/11/06/archives/the-teaching-and-the-taught-collectivism-on-the-campus-a-battle-for.html …pic.twitter.com/OpzsugWEC4

And even then he says it's been going on "for some time now." The only thing new about this story is the New York Times' credulityhttps://twitter.com/danielradosh/status/1500874147483860994?s=20&t=w2EJNNvnLWAW6LWu-9Is6Q …
Daniel Radosh added,
There was a Liberal Orphan Annie sequence from circa 1946 about a conservative professor fired for teaching patriotism.
