Russian governments -- including the incredibly supine & submissive Yeltsin regime -- have been complaining NATO expansion since the 1990s. The current attempt to pretend it's not a factor is absurd gaslighting.https://twitter.com/WillRuger/status/1500836921316192263 …

Given that so many people denounced the idea that NATO enlargement - de jure and de facto - was a key cause of the crisis/conflict, the Russians sure do bring it up a lot and seem to prioritize it in their demands…. https://twitter.com/Reevellp/status/1500810351192985600 …

I mean — “I am worried about NATO expansion, therefore Ukrainians and Russians are a single ethnic group which I will unite” is not really coherent

Yeah, the underlying objection to voluntary NATO and EU expansion, ostensibly for Russia's own security, now seems to pretty clearly be "because it would make it harder to invade and undermine and attack regions that we plan to reabsorb"

its not not a factor, but I'd reckon that the Russian concerns over NATO are not regarding its military use but that it would begin integrating Ukraine into the European sphere. Hence Russian demands against both NATO and EU expansion.

Exactly. The no EU is the same thing as no NATO. It's why they fund separatist movements. It's why they work to undermine international integration wherever they see it. They want a divided, weak Europe with isolated states they can dominate and manipulate. We've known this.

Russia doesn't like NATO expansion because it's a DEFENSIVE COOP TREATY that threatens their OWN PLANS to re-expand the Soviet empire. Russia complaining about NATO expansion is like the mob complaining about RICO enactment/enforcement. NATO is not an aggressor. RUSSIA IS.
