It's interesting that key parts of the Trumpist right remain anti-NATO, although incoherently so (Kimball conjures up the spectre of German revanchism even though dismantling NATO is best way to ensure that).https://twitter.com/josh_hammer/status/1500478354448949255 …

“NATO was formed some 70 years ago…to provide a counterweight to the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. What, apart from bureaucratic inertia, accounts for the persistence of NATO?” @rogerkimball asks a very good question. https://amgreatness.com/2022/03/05/russian-to-judgment-the-birth-of-a-meme/ …

their problem is that want the appearance of anti-imperialism, because the politics of it are generally fairly popular, while actually just wanting imperialism done 'better.'

Russian military actions, including the 1st Chechen War, Transnistria War, & War in Abkhazia, were...factors driving Central & Eastern European countries...to push for NATO application and ensure their long-term security.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enlargement_of_NATO …

NATO serves no purpose is a hell of a take in the wake of Russian aggression in Europe.

It’s because the are rooting for Russia. Why else take this postering? Why else can explain their struggle at supporting the Ukrainians who are clearly the good guys? It’s because they love Putin and want an American strong man.

The failure of Russia to conquer Ukraine quickly, proves all of Russians “masculine “ recruitment videos and lack of preferred pronouns doesn’t have an effect on military readiness or success. That destroys one of their favorite talking points

the main driving factor of trumpism is that there should be no constraints or obligations (practical, moral, or otherwise) on their use of power

NATO stayed in place for a couple of reasons a) it allowed almost all NATO members to cheap out on the military ( US just decided not to ) , former eastern block countries clearly feared Russia would start revanchism at some point and wanted in before that ( correct decision ) .

And because the US and UK weren't too fond of the idea of a european defensive alliance without them because that might do things they don't agree with. This might happen now anyway on top of NATO btw
