There's a lot of wishful thinking from people thinking Russian society is going to turn on Putin's war. But the scale and intensity of domestic repression speaks volumes about the state's perception of its popular support.

Yeah, I think my tweet was less clear than I thought. I don't think we should be terribly optimistic on that front. But the Russian govts own actions suggest they're highly concerned about it.

If I didn't know better, Jeet, I'd mistake your line of thinking for a typical western gloss on a situation we mostly know nothing about. Maybe some of our concepts, like what it means to be popular and whether popularity matters, aren't even transferable to Russia.
