Yes - but then he would have to hold a massive area during an insurgency, and the key discovery of Afghanistan, Vietnam, etc. is that that is incredibly hard. So it's the post-conquering part that is baffling everybody.

When I think of Russians I think of chess players, and bullies who like to head fake. A lot of chess players try to think multiple steps ahead. But as with all chess plans, reality, can only nail down a step ahead, sometimes. Putin miscalculated.
