This strike me as right. I'd add that bombing of Kosovo in 1999 was big part of disillusionment with West in wider Russian societyhttps://twitter.com/zackbeauchamp/status/1499084861172297735 …

This morning I interviewed Yoshiko Herrera, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who studies Russia. She gave the best explanation of the role that NATO played in the current crisis that I've heard anywhere. I've transcribed it below: pic.twitter.com/rhTsPPxalB

I mean, the Russians were backing the Serbians, who were committing war crimes and ethnic cleansing, so yeah, I can see how NATO stopping that led to "disillusionment"

Going to war without UN Security Council approval is a war crime btw

That is most certainly not the way international law actually works my man

"International law is what we says go" is not a good basis for a stable & fair world order.

That's not what international law is either. You know this.

It's worth reading critiques from people who don't share the Nato consensus.

I do. I read them a lot. I literally have a master's degree in this. I have watched hours of Lavrov's speeches and read plenty of academic and media writings taking that perspective. I strongly disagree with it. My perspective is born of information, not ignorance.

Then you'll understand why the Kosovo bombing was experienced in Russia, not just by ultra-nationalists like Putin but by wider society, as a shock.

Of course I do. But between "shocking the Russians" and "stopping an ethnic cleansing" I know what side I come down on. Seems weird to come down on the other side, and that's my point.

You're assuming it couldn't have been stopped in a way that brought in the Russians. That's the mindset of the unipolar moment which got us here.

"it could have been done in a way that brought in the Russians"? The Russians were literally backing Serbia logistically, militarily, and diplomatically. How was that supposed to happen?

Russia was backing ethnic cleansing war criminals and you're blaming NATO for not "bringing them in" and being "unipolar." What the actual hell?

In what way could it have been stopped in a way that brought in the Russians? And how do we know that it would have worked?
