I haven't read Chotiner's stuff before but I thought (as written) Mearsheimer put a coherent position right from the get go, and Chotiner was just really slow to get it until Mearsheimer explained it more slowly

The position was coherent. It wasn’t particularly valid but he DID stick to it, even despite evidence.

One thing missing - former eastern bloc countries asked and wanted fervently to join NATO and EU. What would have happened if the west just closed the door on both saying, nope, you’re still with Russia?
