This is a contrarian position but the Chotiner interviews where he rigorously prods a smart person to reveal their premises are better than the (admittedly hugely entertaining) ones where he gets some not smart person to express their worst self.

Almost every Eastern European country that joined NATO did so because they were legitimately afraid of a resurgent Russia and/or they had a national memory of being invaded, annexed, or otherwise maltreated by Russia/Soviet Union.

In that case ask the question: Why was it that the Baltics are in NATO right now, but Ukraine is not? Doesn't that imply Ukraine's calculus might be different to Lithuania's?

More embarrassing for the interviewee I'd say.

If by "clarifying", you meant Mearsheimer believes his own BS and has an excuse for everything that he's wrong about, then yes, it's "clarifying".🙄

Well I don't know why Russian state officials and Russian state media keep talking about creating a greater Russia if that is self-evidently absurd, as Mearsheimer seems to think. Is it just a running gag or something?

Mearsheimer lists Russia as a great power approximately 50 words after describing how unthreatening it is to us

I think Mearseheimer is very wrong and sees this way too US and western Europe centric in his thinking. Just look at who signed off on instantly granting EU candidate status. Every single Eastern EU member. They will not let Ukraine fell under RUS control . Not gonna happen.

Like he doesn't even acknowledge that Poland that also shares a border with Ukraine. Yeah they don't have nukes their convential army is not that weak. The only reason Russian is a supposed super power is their nukes and well its big.
