I agree that it is an exceptional event but as a German I'm pretty sure that it is indeed an exception, not a major policy shift. Yet. The increased defense budgets will last but the policies are too embedded in our political DNA. If the situation allows it, they'll shift back.

As a German, I found the criticism of German reluctance to get militarily involved in Russia unfair. Our grandfathers killed some 20 million Russians and every German family has lost members over there. Makes one cautious.

Modern Germans are pretty pacifist, which is why this such huge news. But even the usually neutral Swiss are getting involved too.
