Some commentary saying that such a large scale and coordinated attack must have been planned many, many months in advance
-
Yeah, it was planned (and USA intelligence on the planning was accurate) but it's still a reckless move that doesn't have the cover & limits that the earlier stuff did.

Do you maybe think that having access to four years of American intel had anything to do with that?
-
Or being very suddenly cut off from it. Also Putin has a tendency to lash out when a puppet of his is overthrown.

And he always seemed to care about maintaining a thin veneer of deniability in the past, pretending that it wasn't actually the Russian army in Crimea and the Donbas. An open, massive, assault from all sides takes this to a new level.

People have said Putin is trying to establish his legacy, and I wonder if his unusual degree of carefulness about COVID is related to that. Given boosters and tests and now even (seriously limited amounts of) an incredible protease inhibitor, he shouldn't be so afraid ... unless.
-
What if, for example, he underwent cancer treatment? The resulting immunocompromised status could explain his theatrical level of isolation from COVID risk, and the awareness of mortality could explain his relatively precipitous actions in Ukraine.
