I've had to unlearn a lot of what I was taught in high school in the 1980s.

it's absolutely wild because the movie starts off with "the British are pioneering concentration camps in the Boer War and it is objectively a bad thing" and then gets to "Lenin and Hitler are working together for Scottish Dr. Moriarty" it's absolutely baffling
-
like i'd never expect to see even just a SPOKEN acknowledgement of the brutalities of the British empire in the Boer War or even the Boer War at all in a movie like that so it was like "oh wow maybe this is gonna be a different--wait, what the fuck just happen--HITLER??"

To be fair, the politics of “The King’s Man” are so bonkers as to be incompressible. Pretty much calls out every major figure like the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood meme.
-
Incoherent but -- maybe by accident -- it ends up recreating the early 20th century Tory spy fiction of John Buchan which posited global plutocratic (((cabals)))) controlling world events
