The emergency act will almost certainly be used to limit free speech in the future.https://twitter.com/LukewSavage/status/1494763385480785920 …

Something people on the left have been warning about is the prospect that the current disruption will be spun as a pretext for broader action against protests *in general*. Seeing sentiments like this from prominent right wing liberals seems to vindicate that concern. pic.twitter.com/p4vbMDXJ3V

This is broad brush that wipes away essential distinctions. The convoy was not an ordinary protest; it violated laws, and just any laws, but laws that protected rights of other Canadians -- to travel about Ottawa, to be safe from those violating public health regulations...

to be free of weeks of noise pollution, etc. The violation of a law can be an act of civil disobedience (CD), but CD recognizes the right of government to arrest and punish you for breaking the law...

What Convoy was demanding was exactly what the segregationists MLK refers to were demanding: that they could be above the law, and violate it with impunity...

What Canadian government finally did was do what any democratic government must do: enforce its laws. Nothing done today is a precedent that will outlaw protests, or even harm the ability to engage in civil disobedience.

What makes a Frum tweet an authority or arbitrator of Canadian law, or of Canadian government action? As I understand it, he doesn't even live in Canada. He had no role in what was done today...
