The emergency act will almost certainly be used to limit free speech in the future.https://twitter.com/LukewSavage/status/1494763385480785920 …

Something people on the left have been warning about is the prospect that the current disruption will be spun as a pretext for broader action against protests *in general*. Seeing sentiments like this from prominent right wing liberals seems to vindicate that concern. pic.twitter.com/p4vbMDXJ3V

The government is gonna go after any left wing movement viciously no matter what laws are in place. Hilarious to think otherwise

It's not as though sweeping executive powers granted in a crisis is going to lead to a clampdown on any manner of protest at all. Also it's still September 10th, 2001 and I am enjoying this EP from a band calling itself "Breaking Benjamin"

I would think that the failure of the Ontario Government to do anything early on in terms of condemnation or funding the Ottawa police was part the reason.

the occupy protests were cleared with fairly similar tactics city governments serve the people who live there as such there will only be so much patience for outsiders who disrupt the lives of folks who vote in city elections

Certainly every law offers the potential to be abused, but emergencies *do* exist, and this was a situation where using the act was warranted.

It's a terrible precedent and anyone on the left welcoming this is being comically short-sighted, but I wonder if it ever even comes up for left-wing protests, local cops have never waited for special emergency powers to smash heads at e.g. climate / g20 protests.

Except the use has to comply with the Charter. The fact that clearing a protest after three weeks of lawlessness may be considered a reasonable limit on expression rights does not mean that preventing a peaceful march or clearing a park would be.

Have you listened to the videos of this occupation? These folk are not constrained in their speech at all. In Canada, free speech is enshrined...not hate speech though.

When our liberties become the very weapons that malign actors use to undermine civil society, it follows that those liberties must be constrained. To do otherwise is to invite and facilitate further attacks.
