You keep framing the extremists as a tiny faction. They are the organizers. They set the agenda. Anyone who participates in their actions is taking radical action whether they think of themselves as radical or not.

Sure, a good origin story is fun, but one doesn't have to portray them as innately bad to make the point that they are currently, in the moment bad people doing bad things.
-
Who said anything about innate goodness or badness? They're doing bad things.

Cults offer identity, community, and purpose. They tell you that you are special. Isn't it more important, tho, to focus on Who are the cult leaders, and what their motivations are, rathet than the lonely grandma who's bilked of her life savings?

Trying to analyze and justify human cruelty does not lead to a lot of insight in my experience. I've found that the gleeful harming of others is understood by those who revel in it and not by very many others. YMMV

Agreed, but lately those folk have been spitting on my kids, harassing and bullying people in Centretown, torturing people, flooding our 911 system with false calls, occupying our city and using children as human shields. We'll figure them out more later.

Nobody's saying they're innately bad. Bad things are bad, regardless of one's motives, regardless of whether you're "innately" bad, led astray, sold out, a poser, etc. These people have agency, & if they choose to stand w fascists, they deserve to be lumped in w them.
-
If they don't like being lumped in the fascists, there's an easy remedy: don't stand w the fascists, don't be seen w them, disavow them, chase the fascists away, or, if that fails, remove themselves. Any/all of those would make clear they stand apart from the fascists.
