Obviously, these people say they're not racist or radical. But why should we believe them when they were happy to march alongside swastikas, and Confederate flags in a bid to overturn a democratically elected government?
There's a long literature on keywords–like freedom–and how they don't have singular meanings but multitudes that shift all the time based on users and circumstance. I'd like to see more reporting that takes this seriously. Who doesn't love freedom? But freedom for what and whom?
I think you're right re: "to lump everyone together as 'right wing fanatics' in fact serves the interest of the extremist activists." They can prevent being lumped in w Nazis by explicitly disavowing & refusing to be seen w them. "Ten ppl sit down w a Nazi, & 11 Nazis get up."
