I’m confused why the Canadian government needs to invoke extraordinary powers to deal with the blockades when it’s been such a light touch with its ordinary powers. When people block streets, you can arrest them and impound their vehicles.

It's the city police force that set up all the blockades and started arresting people today.

Yes, it seems like the Emergencies Act with it's powers to freeze the bank accounts and funding of the protesters is a way circumvent police inaction.

If you think cities still control their police forces you haven't been paying attention.

That seems to be it. The primary thing is that the feds can now enforce all laws, down to parking, so in theory the RCMP will now be towing trucks like the city police should have done weeks ago.
-
The towing company that has Ottawa's contract was threatened by truckers and wouldn't risk it. Nor will others. So eventually the city will tender a new one. Now the Metro owns one truck they can borrow. Big rig air brakes are a problem.

Indeed this is the lesson with modern police. In Seattle our mayor commanded the police not to teargas protesters anymore, but they continued.

It's a trick. The truckers along with the forces they are bringing down to convene are going to invade the US. We should shut down the Keystone pipeline in response.

Federal government had no jurisdiction in the city. First municipal then provincial. No federal police in these situations.
