Why would you be surprised to see Jeet Heer signing up for a bad-faith reading of someone?

Or maybe try seeing the humor of saying something like "Famine is very bad. But..."

In your view, what do those five words reveal about Matt or Matt's point? Do you believe he was saying that there are some upsides to famine that we should take into account in our policymaking?

Comedy is notoriously difficult to explain.

It's actually very simple. "Famine is very bad, but" is no more funny out of context than "I love my mom, but" unless it reveals something about Matt's thinking. Obviously Katz thought it did or else he wouldn't have posted the screenshot.

Maybe read Katz's posts. They're very enlightening. I'll note the screenshot contains the full context, which is also funny in a different way. But again if you don't see the humor, I'm not sure we can help.

Yes, I read Katz's posts, and I read the transcript they're from (*that's* the full context, not the screenshot). MY is saying hawks are happy to use humanitarian rhetoric, but the fact that they're also happy to starve people shows that rhetoric is insincere. Do you disagree?

I feel like there are better, less unintentionally funny, ways to express these ideas.

I mean, you've done podcasts. You know that a transcript of your speech, or anyone's, will be less polished than your prose. And even then there's nothing actually mockable here, let alone anything worth two sneering screenshots!

You can't sincerely think that all of us should constantly police ourselves to avoid saying "X is bad, but" or get ridiculed. Matt is not saying that there's anything not-bad about famine! Nothing makes me hope that I can get you to admit this but I have to try.
