This would explain the wild discrepancy between what Ukrainian government (until it was brought in line) was saying and what Washington has been saying. Maybe there's some genius chess playing going on but I don't think "alarmism" is sustainable as a policyhttps://twitter.com/juliaioffe/status/1493947410372079624 …

Yes, describing reality can be upsetting. The alternative is worse. And?

Alarmism is not actually describing reality.

Ukraine has openly been talking about the mixed approach and why the US and Ukraine are doing this differently. I already told you. Why don't you go looking for some information on this topic?

I'm not convinced it meaningfully raises risks above where they are given the fact that Russia really did move 150000 troops to the border.

Credibility is an interesting word to bring up in this situation, where accurately describing the situation is termed alarmism, all this feels like being back in 2002-3 but with a chunk of the left wing seeing the mass weapons

Ukraine is its own country, Jeet. They're not a U.S. state or a Canadian province. They don't look to North American essayists for their fear and uncertainty regarding Russia. They get plenty of that from Russia itself, camped on their border with tanks and MRLSs.

Don't you the Biden administration is pre-emptively describing Putin's plans before he attempts them? Yes, I see the inherent risk in this, but it's not like Putin is bluffing. There's considerable downside to bluffing and not following thru.

I would have to disagree. I think the daily “alarmism” over the invasion and false flag attacks has made it more difficult for Putin to pull the trigger.
