This would explain the wild discrepancy between what Ukrainian government (until it was brought in line) was saying and what Washington has been saying. Maybe there's some genius chess playing going on but I don't think "alarmism" is sustainable as a policyhttps://twitter.com/juliaioffe/status/1493947410372079624 …

I would like advocates of alarmism as a policy to acknowledge that it comes with costs: it actual helps destabalize Ukrainian society (by sowing fear & uncertainty), makes accidental war due to mixed signalling marginally more likely, and undermines credibility with public.

I think when(if) it doesn't happen this time it will make Biden look strong domestically, though -- like he blew down the Big Bad Wolf instead of the house (or something something)

So couldn't be the sanctions are working? Or maybe that Putin is on his own time frame and will invade when he wants but Ukraine needs to be ready regardless?

Except the US government has literally endless credibility around hyping security threats. The media never, ever calls them on it. IMHO it's a brilliant hack of the press' love of bellicosity.
