I don't thin you can fight fascism by empowering the armed agents of the state. Just a thought.

I think this is wrong on two counts. First, the most disastrous strategy for combating fascism in the 1930s was that which decided to organize vigilante groups on the left to street fight with fascist vigilantes, much like Antifa today...

Violence -- nasty, crude, in your face street mob violence -- is the stock in trade of fascism. You can't and shouldn't try to beat them at their own game. If you have any doubt about that, just look at Portland, Seattle, Bay Area over last three years or so...

They will be defeated primarily in political struggle, especially elections, and in nonviolent direct action. Second, the state should have a monopoly of the use of force, and should use it sparingly...

But when the neo-fascist right is attempting insurrections, coups, a March on Ottawa which is reminiscent of Mussolini's March on Rome, when it is using force to overturn democratic processes, the state should shut them down...

The only issue in Canada, IMHO, was why it took so long for the state to move, and why Trudeau dithered until Ford acted, so that now Ford will be able to posture as the guy who stood up to the far right that 70% of Canadians were enraged by.

The fact the state dithered -- and why it usually dithers in the face of the far right -- is perhaps a clue as to why an alternative strategy is needed.
