The Trump problem is a subset of the elite impunity problem, which goes back decades.https://twitter.com/djrothkopf/status/1491613199061368840 …

There's an assumption that underlies the impulses that led to the pardon of Nixon, the decision not to prosecute Reagan for Iran-Contra, the decision not to prosecute the Bush Admin for war crimes, the decision to accept the OLC memo that presidents can't be indicted...

Elite impunity? Reminds me of a tweet saying that if you've lived in a state of privilege, maybe equality feels like oppression. Does "elite" mean those under the wing (the "cult"?) of white supremacy? Anyone who manages to, um, "win" that status?

The “elite” usually means the 1%. Occupy street still has the best descriptor. You can have a diverse 1%, in fact corporations love to have ceos who are POC or women to help give that appearance or wave rainbow, blm flags — while gaming the system, stealing wages etc.

seems implausible there's often times when elites don't have near impunity, that's the point of being an elite with power. what we lack is the social cohesion to believe the lies about why that's ok or a system without elites.

Any equity that was within the system has been crushed. Like the gilded age, we now have elite elites with zero accountability. Love how you put this because we do have to decide if that’s the outcome we want — again.

He's attributing it to high-minded beliefs when the actual cause is that elites just don't want accountability for their class. The rhetoric about institutions is just what they tell everyone else

One could make a good case that everything over the last 50 years is the poison fruit of Nixon getting a pardon.

And reason he got that pardon is he was in the pocket of the 1%, who he did biggest favor in 🌎by letting them dismantle our manufacturing & send it all to China so 1% could regain all they lost through FDR initiatives (labor, SocSecurity, pensions, etc) #PartyLikeIts1899🤮 🌊

I think it at least goes back to letting the Confederate leadership get off the hook. I still can’t believe we didn’t hang Jefferson Davis.
