I'd like the "could you make that film today" conversation to encompass movies without the n-word. Could you make City Lights? The Wizard of Oz? The Third Man? Wild Strawberries? 400 Blows?

I mean, what Menard DID in the Borges story is impossible — although based on a philosophically attractive notion. One that I don’t think credibly carries over to filmmaking, a rather more collaborative activity than writing.

I don’t think that anything from the Golden Age of Hollywood could be remade. Those forms of expertise are simply gone. Attempts to do this always look like pastiche. Movies, generally, are singular “events”, unrepeatable.
