For a member of an ethnic group to offer absolution for the nation’s historical role in an atrocity against that group in the name of some kind of ambition is a very standard hustle.

True! I guess I just have trouble believing the Dreyfus thing is still a thing. Which is, of course, a me-problem. Obviously the past isn't past. Even so, the whole 'you know, the prosecutors of Dreyfus had nobility' thing seems like a rake you have to go a long way to step on.

Haven't they read "Penguin Island"? I don't understand. No, seriously. They are STILL on about it? Really? I had no idea. Well, I'll see myself out.

There are still monarchists in France too. It's part of the nature of the right not to let these things go.

But do they think Dreyfus was guilty? Or that it was reasonable to suspect him so it wasn't really antisemitism? Or what? What gets a modern anti-Dreyfusard out of bed in the morning? Are there anti-Dreyfus discussion boards?

It's the same logic that is still used to defend Joseph McCarthy in USA -- maybe wrong on some details but right in the broader theory.

So the vibe is that Dreyfus was a shady, suspicious guy? Probably guilty of something else?

Yeah, there's something about that (((Dreyfus))) guy that isn't quite right.

its not really about dreyfus as individual as much as the affair crystallized two different conceptions of France that are still in conflict. i encourage you guys to read my series on it!

I've read the series! One way to look at this is the way Willmoore Kendall looked at McCarthyism: that the issue of individual guilt is less important than the question of whether the majority or the real nation gets to set normative parameters & police suspected interlopers.
